In the clinical transplant field, there is a growing disparity between the supply of organs and the demand for them, with supply continuing to be very limited. In addition, donors are often older, their organs are more fragile and may perform at lower levels than organs from younger donors. Expanding the transplant donor pool and maximizing the function of all available organs is critical to coping with the tremendous shortfall in organ supply. It is useful to discuss the risk factors and therapeutic modalities with all persons involved in such cases. Approximately twice as many patients with severe diseases, such as multi-organ failure and AKI, die in intensive care units when compared with patients without AKI. These patients die not as a result of AKI, but because of the different complications that follow AKI. More of controlled studies should be done to improve the clinical outcome and decrease the high costs of this therapeutic method. Lewis D Bunce Patent

Monday, 30 May 2011 | by Mark Tucker

I recently learned from my cousin, Carol, that  my 2nd Great Grandfather, Lewis DeMott Bunce (1827-1894), received a patent for improvements to the butter churn.

Inventor: Lewis D Bunce

Invention: Churn (improvements)

Patent No.: 337, 238

Patented: Mar. 2, 1886

BuncePatent1 BuncePatent2 BuncePatent3 BuncePatent4 BuncePatent5

Short extract from the patent:

My invention relates to the improvement in churns, the object of the same being to provide a churn in which the dasher and dasher-operating mechanism, either or both, can be readily removed from the churn body when it is desired to cleanse the parts or remove the butter.

A further object is to provide a churn in which the motion of the cream while being agitated will be steady and regular, which will permit a section of the cover to be left off while churning without danger of throwing a portion of cream out of the churn.

A further object is to provide a churn with side wings and dasher adapted to be adjusted vertically to accommodate them to varying quantities of cream in the churn.

It is exciting to see that one of my ancestors was an inventor.

Let me know if you have an ancestor that was an inventor or received a patent.

PROVO, Utah – May 26, 2011 – Memorial Day is coming soon, and AppTime (http://www.apptime.com), the group behind the family history app MobileTree (http://www.mobiletree.me), has a new project they’re thrilled to share. It’s called BillionGraves.com, it’s as ambitious a project as the word “billion” makes it sound, and they want you to take it with you to the cemetery this Memorial Day.

“It’s a huge opportunity for everyone in family history,” says Rob Moncur, the head developer for the BillionGraves.com website. “We want people from all over the world to be able work together and pool resources so everyone can find the ancestors they’re looking for.”

Ancestor Summer Fun

Friday, 27 May 2011 | by Mark Tucker

Yesterday was the last day of school for my children and summer vacation has official begun.

The Photo

Coincidently, yesterday a cousin posted the following photo on a family Facebook group:

The photo is of my great grandmother, Florence Reich Bunce, and her daughter Emmie Irene taken in Aug 1962. My 89 year old ancestor is about to spray her 67 year old daughter.

The Challenge

What photos do you have of ancestor’s summer activities?  Whether it be camping, a picnic, or water fun post your photos and include a link in the comments section.

Have a great summer!

Stay cool!

Use Facebook to Promote Your Family Reunion

Sunday, 22 May 2011 | by Mark Tucker

Have you ever been surprised and delighted by something that in hindsight was so obvious?  That happened to me this last week.

A few weeks ago I received a plain old snail mail letter from a Carol Sweat in Utah.  It turns out that she is my 2nd cousin and is planning a Bunce family reunion for the first weekend in July. My mother’s mother is a Bunce and every Christmas there is a small reunion for my grandmother, uncles, cousins and family. This is the first Bunce reunion that I have ever been invited to.

Too bad that I can’t attend the reunion this year as it conflicts with other plans that have already been made. But I wanted to do something to support the reunion, so I contacted Carol with an idea.  Why not create a group on Facebook for the descendants of James Hyrum Bunce and his wife, Florence Reich?

James H & Florence Bunce abt 1896

I contacted Carol by e-mail (found in the reunion invitation) and we connected on Facebook.  I then created the James Hyrum Bunce Family group on Facebook with Carol as the first member.  It is a private group so you must be invited to join.  The group was created on Tuesday (5 days ago) and it already has 43 members. That is 38 more relatives that I have contact with now that I didn’t know a week ago.  Amazing!
