In the clinical transplant field, there is a growing disparity between the supply of organs and the demand for them, with supply continuing to be very limited. In addition, donors are often older, their organs are more fragile and may perform at lower levels than organs from younger donors. Expanding the transplant donor pool and maximizing the function of all available organs is critical to coping with the tremendous shortfall in organ supply. It is useful to discuss the risk factors and therapeutic modalities with all persons involved in such cases. Approximately twice as many patients with severe diseases, such as multi-organ failure and AKI, die in intensive care units when compared with patients without AKI. These patients die not as a result of AKI, but because of the different complications that follow AKI. More of controlled studies should be done to improve the clinical outcome and decrease the high costs of this therapeutic method. National Genealogical Society image

It wasn’t until after I pressed publish on my last post that the recognition was made.  It appears that the Genea-Speak award has used the logo from the National Genealogical Society.

Maybe footnoteMaven or someone else with a designer’s eye and Photoshop skills will design a new logo for the Genea-Speak award.

Boy Scout & Scout Masters Handbooks on Google Books

Thursday, 10 Dec 2009 | by Mark Tucker

Today is the official kickoff audiocast to start the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.

The Boy Scouts of America was organized in 1910 and within the first few years two key handbooks were created:

In doing some research on Scouting history, I decided to check out Google Books to see if it hand any early Scout texts.  I was pleased to find fully scanned images of the handbooks.  It is at the troop level that Scouting happens and the two main roles are the Scout Master and the boy Scouts.

The Official Handbook for Boys

The purpose of this handbook as stated in its preface:

In order that the work of the boy scouts throughout America may be uniform and intelligent, the National Council has prepared its “Official Handbook,” the purpose of which is to furnish the patrols of the boy scouts advice in practical methods, as well as inspiring information.

The copy on Google Books is copyright 1911:
